Roles of a Health Care Assistant (HCA)
1. Client Care and Support
o Assist with daily activities where necessary (bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding).
o Help with mobility, transfers, and positioning.
o Monitor and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
o Provide emotional support and companionship.
2. Hygiene and Environmental Maintenance
o Keep clients rooms clean and organized.
o Change bed linens and maintain comfort.
o Follow infection control and hygiene protocols.
o Dispose of medical waste safely.
3. Observing and Reporting
o Monitor and document changes in client’s condition.
o Report concerns to teamleaders, manager, nurses or healthcare professionals.
o Maintain accurate patient care records.
o Assist in administering medication if medication competent.
4. Family and Visitor Support
o Provide guidance and reassurance to families.
o Facilitate communication between clients and staff.
o Encourage client’s engagement in activities.
5. Promoting Comfort and Well-being
o Encourage client’s independence while offering support.
o Ensure proper nutrition and hydration.
o Maintain a safe and calming environment.
